The Three Gates: Permission, Edge, Rendering

Deep-dive session · 25 minutes

Every site that is invisible to AI fails at one of three gates. Permission: your robots.txt quietly turns crawlers away. Edge: your CDN blocks them before your server ever sees the request. Rendering: the crawler gets in, but the stored page has no words worth learning from. A live walkthrough tracing a real domain through all three gates, with the checks the audience can run on their own sites the same day.

Stephen Burns works at the intersection of SEO, GEO, and web-scale data systems. As Web Intelligence Lead at the Common Crawl Foundation, the open web archive behind a majority of today's large language models, he leads work on how the web is discovered, structured, and used in search and AI, building tools that analyze crawlability, structured data, and search signals across billions of pages. He collaborates with researchers and search engineers to make the open web more useful and machine-readable. As Principal Technical SEO and GEO at Intuit, he ties that upstream data reality to the work enterprise search teams already do. His career spans web development, marketing, and technical SEO and GEO, built through roles at Intuit, U.S. Bank, Charles Schwab, Blekko, and Netscape/America Online, and he is a graduate of OCAD University and The Institute for Computer Studies.
